Cryx - Bonejacks

Here's a shot of my gang of Bonejacks - I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, although they weren't exactly what I envisioned. The main colour, which is Formula P3's Cryx Bane Base and the intended 'house' colours for Cryx, is actually a green/grey blend. I had always pictured Cryx being black, but I guess that's probably just how most people paint them.

Still, happy how with how they turned out and seeing them in a group I'm also sold on the colour scheme I choose for my Cryx army.

I haven't quite finished my Slayer yet, but since I had my camera out, I took some WIP shots, which I'll post soon.

An Unexpected Addition...

The boss was out of the office today, and being Friday I thought I would be able to get away with an extended lunch break. So my buddy and I went off to check out Good Games Sydney, as we'd been meaning to check it out for while.
It's a cool store - half of the floorspace is dedicated to gaming tables, which were occupied by gamers enjoying their trading card games. 2/3 of the stock was trading card games, but the rest were miniatures from a good mix of companies - GW, PP, Mantic, Wyrd and a few others too.

I gravitated towards the Warmachine stuff, the Cryx in particular, and starting browsing through the warjacks, and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a Nightmare Warjack with the price marked at $35.99! The friendly staff admitted their error, and happily sold me the Nightmare at the marked price.
So, that's how I came to be in possession of the Cryx Nightmare - it's an awesome model, which I'm really looking forward to painting up. I haven't decided if I'm going to try and work it into my list for the Journeyman League coming up, but will post any updates!

Cryx - Defiler

Yesterday I finished off the last Bonejack - which is good as I was tired of painting Bonejacks, and keen to get onto my Slayer.
Painting the Bonejacks did have the benefit of providing much needed wet-blending practice for the Slayer, which I'm a little daunted about starting because of it's size and awesomeness - which I hope to do justice.

I should probably take a group shot of my Bonejacks at some point - I'll do that over the weekend.

Cryx - Deathripper 2

I think my wet-blending is getting a little better - I think on this model the blend is a little more subtle, so it looks a bit smoother.

So that's the second Deathripper done, next up is the Defiler - which is pretty much a Deathripper except with a gun coming out of it's face.

Cryx - Deathripper 1

I got home from work yesterday and decided that I liked the pink and purple glow - I felt it made my Cryx a little unique while still maintaining the Cryx look and feel.

So I finished up basing on the model, and overall pretty happy with the end result! My first Cryx model done! I'm really curious to see how the look applies to army as a whole, but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Cryx - Test Model

I wanted my Cryx to be different to the other Cryx out there, but at the same time I didn't want to stray too far from the Cryx colours, as the dark, necrotic nature of the colours are part of what attracted me to the faction.
On a whim I tried replacing the bright glowing green with another bright colour - pink! I think it turned out alright, but I'll sleep on it decide if I want an entire Cryx army with the same pink style.

I ended up going over my initial attempts at wet-blending again and I think there's a little improvement - but still a long way to go!

Cryx Colours - Wet Blending Practice

This style of blending seems more naturally appeals to me more, as opposed to other techniques I've read or seen, so here are some shots of my first attempts at wet blending on my Cryx - blends just using Cryx Bane Base up to Cryx Bane Highlight.

I'm really glad I bought Privateer Press' Cryx Colour Set. I prefer the paint consistency of the Formula P3 paints over the Citadel paints I'm used to - the paints are wetter, meaning it takes a few more coats to get a solid colour, but allows for wet blending of colours on the model.

I think it looks alright for a first attempt but still a long way to go. Practice makes perfect, and the large areas on the Bonejacks and Slayers should be a good proving ground.

Cryx - Battlebox Assembled and Primed

Cleaned, assembled and based.
I finally found the time to get started on my Cryx, and first up was cleaning, assembling and then basing them - I managed to get all this done before nightfall, so I popped outside and got their undercoat done too.

First thing I noticed was that the contents of the Battle box were not on sprues, and that the pieces were in little baggies. So they just needed cleaning up - standard mould lines and sprue clip trimming.

The models themselves I think are fantastic - Warwitch Deneghra is in a great commanding pose, and the Slayer came in enough bits so that I could give him a bit more of a menacing stride. The Bonejacks were also bigger than I thought, which was a cool surprise.

[WM] Cryx - Escalating Army Lists

Now that I have all my Cryx models, I have to decide what order I'll paint them in. There is talk of a Journeyman League starting up at the local club, so I'll need to write list for the following point levels - 15 points, 25 points and 35 points, all of which need to include and build up from the battlebox.

Here are the point levels for the Cryx battlebox, which totals 14 points:
  • pDeneghra (-5)
  • Deathripper (4)
  • Deathripper (4)
  • Defiler (5)
  • Slayer (6)
To get to 15 points I'll need to add a 1 point unit, which I'll probably proxy with another Cryx model I have (I don't think it's worth buying another model I don't plan on using in later lists):
  • Machine Wraith (1)
For my 25 point list, I'll drop the above Machine Wraith and paint a unit and their command group:
  • Bane Thralls - Leader + 9 Grunts (8)
  • Bane Thralls - Command Group (3)
And finally, I'll add the solos to the army to make a 35 point list:
  • Bane Lord Tartarus (4)
  • Skarlock (2)
  • Warwitch Siren (2)
  • Warwitch Siren (2)

Alright, that's the plan! I'm sure at some point I'll take a break from this project to start on my shelved 40K army, but at least now I know what order I'll be painting these guys.
After writing this, I'm actually kinda laughing at myself, mocking my ability to see this through... maybe I'll need to implement some kind alternating painting plan to keep me motivated - paint some Warmachine, then paint some 40K... we'll see how it goes.
So here's my Cryx page, which I'll update with all the competed photos of my Cryx models!
